Join the Dead Opossum Collective
Joining the Dead Opossum Collective is not a decision that must be announced.
It is not a form to complete. It is not a threshold to cross. It is not something that requires permission.
In many cases, it has already happened.
There Is No Enrollment
We do not maintain a registry. We do not track participation. We do not assign identification. To do so would require a level of activity that feels unnecessary.
How One Joins
You may consider yourself part of the Collective if you have ever:
- paused instead of reacting
- remained silent when noise demanded a reply
- stepped away from a situation that did not deserve your energy
- allowed something to pass without interference
These moments are not failures. They are acts of alignment.
A Simple Acknowledgment (Optional)
If you prefer something more formal, you may observe the following:
- Find a place where you will not be interrupted.
- Become still—standing, sitting, or lying down.
- Remain that way for a short, intentional period.
- Acknowledge, quietly: “I do not respond to everything.”
- Continue with your day.
No record is kept.
What Happens Next
Nothing immediate. There is no welcome packet. No expectations will be placed upon you.
Instead, you may begin to notice a growing comfort with stillness, a reduced urgency to engage or a quiet understanding of when to withdraw.
These are not requirements. They are side effects.
On Participation
Participation is irregular by design. You may engage deeply for a time, disappear for a while or return without explanation. All of these are acceptable. Absence is not absence here.
On Being Recognized (Optional)
There is no requirement to identify yourself as part of the Collective. In most cases, it is preferable not to. However, some choose to wear small, quiet markers, garments with minimal text or symbols, that may be recognized by others who understand. These are not uniforms. They are not declarations. They are incidental.
On the Garments
Some members wear simple shirts bearing phrases such as:
- Play Dead.
- I am not required.
- Untouchable.
These are not meant to attract attention. Ideally, they do not. If noticed, they require no explanation.
On Recognition
If another recognizes the meaning, nothing must be said. A glance is sufficient. No acknowledgment is also sufficient.
A Gentle Clarification
Wearing a garment does not make one a member. Not wearing one does not exclude you. Stillness cannot be displayed reliably.
If You Choose to Wear One
Wear it without intention to signal. Wear it without expectation of response. Wear it as you would anything else and allow it to be overlooked.
A Gentle Reminder
The world will continue to ask for your attention. It will insist that you respond, react, and involve yourself. You are allowed to choose otherwise. You are allowed to become, when needed, unreachable.
If You Are Unsure
If you are wondering whether you belong here that hesitation is understandable. Take a moment. Do nothing. If that feels correct, you already know.
Play Dead. Live Better.
